It is likely that you have already heard of COVID-19 and have experienced some degree of effects from the illness. Since March 2020, news headlines have been taken over regarding COVID-19. This pandemic has caused great tragedy and loss all over the world. Unfortunately over 500,000 american lives were lost to this virus. Although there are great strides being made in getting Americans vaccinated, it’s still extremely important to continuously get tested to help slow the spread. Today we’ll discuss why people should still be frequently getting tested for COVID-19. One way to get tested is to go to a Bay Area rapid COVID testing center.

COVID-19 Explained

Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that can cause illness in people. Some circulate regularly in the United States and lead to upper respiratory symptoms such as a runny nose or cough, although some coronaviruses can lead to more serious forms of illness. The new or novel 2019 coronavirus is what causes the illness most people know as COVID-19.

COVID-19 is a disease that was initially identified in Wuhan, China and continues to be spread across the globe. People are encouraged to be careful and take precautions to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 infectious disease.

Just like other infectious diseases, COVID-19 is spread through the air by sneezing or coughing or by close personal contact (touch, shaking hands, touching your eyes or nose before washing your hands, etc.).

Symptoms of COVID19 include cough, fever, chills, shortness of breath, headache, new loss of taste or smell, runny nose/congestion, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain and/or diarrhea. Symptoms can appear anywhere from 2 to 14 days after exposure.

A COVID test is a type of diagnostic test. There are two different types of COVID-19 tests – molecular tests, which are also known as nucleic acid, RNA or PCR tests, and rapid antigen tests.

Why It Is Important to Get Tested Frequently for COVID-19

Many people with COVID-19 have mild or no symptoms but could still be infected with and pass the disease on to others. Sometimes people do not realize that they have been in close contact with someone who has a confirmed case of COVID-19. Because of this, it is important to be tested for COVID-19 regularly.

Furthermore, the Department of Health and Environmental Control recommends people who are out and about in the community receive routine testing once a month or sooner – especially if a person has been around someone who tests positive or if you have symptoms. This enables public health workers to diagnose those who are without symptoms (asymptomatic) while interrupting the further and ongoing spread of the novel coronavirus.

It is also important to be tested regularly for COVID-19 if you have regular contact with a person who is at increased risk for severe illness or are yourself, getting tested regularly is a good idea. Most people have some form of contact with people of concern who may be at increased risk of severe illness.
